AN EASTERN ROMAN BASALT LION SPOUT
CIRCA 1ST-2ND CENTURY A.D.
The massive architectural fragment with a frontal lion head projecting below a cavetto cornice, with an egg-and-dart border above, the lion with an unruly radiating mane, curling along the sides, the undulating brows with drill holes indicating the fur, the deeply-set eyes with bulging pupils, the rounded bridge of the nose fluted, the nostrils deeply drilled, the wide mouth open through to the back serving as a spout, the teeth and fangs prominent, notched at the bottom left edge
