A ROMAN MARBLE SARCOPHAGUS PANEL
CIRCA 2ND CENTURY A.D.
Depicting the drunken Hercules in a Bacchic thiasos, the procession lead by Paposilenus riding side-saddle with his feet on the left side of a mule, wearing a tunic, seated on an animal skin, holding the hero's club over his left shoulder, the mule with its head turned back, a satyr behind him carrying a torch in each hand, nude but for an animal skin tied around his waist, followed by the bearded hero, wearing a mantle, a fillet in his hair, holding a thyrsus in his left hand, supported by three satyrs, one to the right, depicted nude, the hero's arm over his shoulders, one to the left in a crouch, pushing up on Hercules' torso, and the third to the left, his hand gesturing behind the hero's shoulder with two fingers extended, and Pan to the left, his body turned away, his head turned back, a lagabolon in his raised right hand
