Born in Padua in 1963, Grazia Toderi attended the fine art academy of Bologna. In 1992 she moved to Milan and came to critical attention with her video works, which she presented in the 1993 and 1999 Biennial of Venice where she was bestowed with the Leone d'Oro for the Best Pavilion. At present she counts as one of the leading artists of the Italian contemporary art scene. Toderi's work is distinctive for the innovative way in which she uses video to delve into a microcosm of events that appear insignificant but are loaded with powerful reflections on the human condition. A dialogue with literature and especially painting is central to Toderi's aesthetic. Solo exhibitions were shown at the Casino de Luxembourg, 1998; Castello di Rivoli, Museum Ludwig, Cologne, 1999; the Frac Languedoc-Roussillon in Montepellier and the Fundaci Joan Mir in Barcelona. Important international shows include: Istanbul Biennial, 1997; Sydney Biennial, 1998; Guggenheim Museum Soho, New York; the Ludwig Museum, Cologne; the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; the Biennial of Pusan in South Korea. Public and private collections with her work include the Museum of Contemporary Art, Serralves; the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin; Castello di Rivoli, Turin; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Ludwig Museum, Aachen; Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, Rome and the Worcester City Art Gallery, London. Her work was shown at de Appel in 1999.
