Lot Essay

Kostis Velonis was educated at the Paris VIII University, the London Consortium (Birkbeck College) and the N.T.U.A University of Athens. His work combines found materials into fragile and autonomous sculptures whose point of departure lies in the failure of modern utopias. In 2006, Velonis' work was shown at Witte de With, Rotterdam as part of the group exhibition Don Quijote. His work is currently on display in the solo exhibition How one can think freely in the shadow of a temple, Kunstverein, Hamburg (2009). He has been represented in many group exhibitions including Show me, don't tell me, the 1st Brussels Biennial, Brussels (2008); Collage. Cut, paste, State Museum of Contemporary Art, Salonica (2008); Athensville, Helexpo, Athens (2008); Barricades without borders' 68. - New (Brave) World, XXIV International Festival, Sarajevo (2008); In Present Tense, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (2007); and the 9th Lyon Biennial, Lyon (2007).
