Lawrence Weiner is considered one of the central figures of conceptual art. He attended the New York Public School System and spent the late fifties and early sixties traveling throughout North America. Working in a wide variety of media, including video, film, books, audiotapes, sculpture, performance, installation, and graphic art, Weiner consistently invokes social situations that elicit responses to issues of language, philosophy, theater, and art, while working across artistic conventions. In 2007 the Whitney Museum of American Art and the L.A Museum of Contemporary Art presented his major retrospective Lawrence Weiner 1960 - 2007: As Far As The Eye Can See. The touring exhibition travelled to Europe at the K21 Kunstsammlung, Düsseldorf, in 2008.
