Lot Essay

These charming candelabra derive from a pattern for a clock garniture celebrating Africa by the clock-maker Jean-Simon de Verberie in his Cahier des Desseins des Pendules of 1799. The model was also popularised by Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's romantic novel Paul et Virginie first published in 1787.
