Deeply passionate about his native area of Hunan, Qi Baishi often drew upon his hometown as a source of inspiration and made comments such as, I use the ink and brush from my home to paint the hills and rivers of my home. This makes Qis work highly individualistic and original. As seen in the present lot, Qi created a very personal and spontaneous image of rain in the springtime, which captures the heavy, moist air of the mountains through the use of a wet brush. Spatial depth is conveyed by juxtaposing the closeness of the hillside village with the majestic mountains in the distance, all enveloped in the misty atmosphere.
