Li Chuli (1900-1994), also named Li Yizi, was born in Jiangjin, Sichuan province. The May Fourth Movement in 1919 had a tremendous effect on Li's academic career. While in Japan, he gave up his studies in industrial and engineering subjects in Tokyo and subsequently pursued an education in literature at Kyoto University. It was in Kyoto where Li first read about Marxism and began to participate in revolutionary activities. In the early years of the Republic, Li cared deeply about expatriated Chinese cultural relics and saw the work of collecting, archiving, and preserving them as a lifelong interest and career. In 1983, Li donated 568 artifacts including paintings, calligraphy, ink rubbings, ceramics, ink stones and bronzes to the Chongqing Museum - his private collection that had been assembled over 30 years. Li donated another 43 objects to the same museum again in 1990.
