Chancery 2° (295 x 208mm). Collation: a10 AA4 B-Z8 a-q8 r6 (a1r blank, a1v commentary, AA1r tabula, B1r text with commentary surround, r2v colophon, Rime diverse). 324 leaves. The table in two columns, Canzoniere in three. 61 lines and headline. Type: 6:109R, 7:80R. 100 woodcuts, woodcut white-vine initials from several sets, 2-line initial spaces. (Lightly washed, some residual soiling at margins, o1 holed with slight loss, small marginal wormhole in final quires.) Red morocco gilt by Douglas Cockerel, signed with initials and dated 1903, front panel enclosing a wreath with author's name in gilt. Provenance: early 19th-century Italian annotations at end -- William Henry Smith, 3rd Viscount Hambleden (bookplate).
Fourth illustrated edition. All early illustrations of the Divine Comedy derive from Botticelli, though only the first 19 of his designs were engraved for the 1481 Florentine edition. The cuts used by Plasiis are very similar in design to those used by Benalius and Capcasa in March of the same year.
