Engraved frontispiece of Atlas supporting a planispherical world map, portrait of George I by Picart, 28 double-page (one folding) maps, 2 folding plates of fortification plans, engraved title vignette, headpiece and initial opening dedication, ALL MAPS AND TITLE-PAGE WITH FINE, CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOURING HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD, all sheets on guards. (Two text leaves lightly mottled.) Contemporary red morocco gilt, Atlas cartouche on sides with globe tools at corners and spine, crown at corners (neat repairs at joints). Provenance: 3rd(?) Earl Cowper (1738-89; bookplate, by descent).

FIRST EDITION. Renard amended plates from De Wit's sea atlas, modernising it to ensure the atlas's practicality. The present copy, in its magnificent red morocco binding, richly coloured and with gold highlights, is significantly finer than any other offered at auction in over 30 years.
