GERHARD, Eduard (1795-1867). Antique Bildwerke. Volume 1, parts 1-4, and volume 4, part 1. Stuttgart and Tübingen: J.G. Cotta, 1827-1830, 1839.
5 parts only, 2° (c.555 x c.420mm, with some variation between parts). Engraved title vignette in vol.1 part 1, and 100 engraved plates, i.e. Plates 1-80 and 301-320. (Variable spotting, heavy on very few and light on most.) Each part in the original blue printed wrappers, in one green morocco-backed chemise and slipcase (some spotting, light wear at the extremities, the last part lacking the spine, the front wrapper detached and with some fading). Provenance: contemporary inscription on the front wrapper of vol.1, part 2.
IN THE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS. The first four parts, and another, of Gerhard's monumental survey of Classical iconography published serially between 1827 and 1844. The wrappers are particularly important because the plates were issued without text, and the wrappers provide the contents for each part. Each is dedicated to a specific subject: primarily gods, heroes, mystery cults, and personal life. RARE: not in Blackmer; ABPC records no copy selling at auction in over 30 years; WorldCat apparently locates only fragmentary sets outside Germany.
