2° (514 x 333mm). 93 lithographic and engraved plates, one of which hand-coloured and 4 colour-printed, lithographic and engraved vignettes, one of which hand-coloured. (Spotting.) Contemporary russia, sides panelled in gilt and blind incorporating a scrolling-tool border, marbled edges (extremities lightly rubbed).

FIRST EDITION of a comprehensive study of the iconography of the myths of Achilles, Orestes and Odysseus. Complete with all the supplemental plates called for on the list of plates and uncommon thus; the Blackmer copy lacked plate 2 (see Sotheby's, 12 October 1989, lot 944). Raoul-Rochette's deep appreciation of his material was widely admired; the Nouvelle Biographie Générale remarks that 'his clear and nuanced speech, [and] his broad erudition, attracted constantly an elite audience' (p.464).
