4 parts in 3, broadsheet 2° (c.550 x 385mm). 101 (of 104) engraved plates, comprising: engraved general title, 4 engraved part titles, engraved plate list in pts I and II, engraved subscriber list in pt. I, and 93 (of 96) engravings after Claude. 3 letter-press (Life of Claude, subscriber list, plate list for III-IV). (Lacking plates II:4, 8, 20, faint spotting in a few plates only, pencil note on one margin.) Original purple moirée, lettered on spine (pt. I); pt. II plates loose as issued, in portfolio uniform with pt. I; pts III-IV plates loose as issued in original portfolio, uniform with pts. I-II, upper cover lettered in gilt (spines sunned, last part sunned to brown).

A RARE WORK OF PRINTS WHICH 'HAVE FORMED THE IMAGE OF CLAUDE FOR THEIR CENTURY' (Roethlisberger I, 71). Lewis states in the first part that he has reproduced original drawings by Claude, which were brought from Madrid by Mr. Binda, acquired by Richard Payne Knight, and bequeathed to the British Museum, 'none of them have been before engraved'. The third part was dedicated to the Duke of Devonshire; among the subscribers to the work was John Constable. No copies have appeared at auction in over 30 years, and few complete sets have been located in institutions. Brunet III, 1170; Lowndes 1398; cf. M.
