4 volumes in one, 2° (395 x 315mm). 291 engravings on 126 leaves by Tomkins and others, 13 numbered engraved plans. (Some spotting to plate margins, earlier part of text to vol. IV bound into vol. III.) Contemporary russia gilt, gilt edges (slight wear to one corner).
An uncoloured copy (ordinary issue). A few copies are known on large paper with the illustrations coloured and mounted on stiff card (published at the enormous price of £171 14s). The work was regarded as an artistic triumph but was not a success financially, and Tomkins had to bear great losses. Abbey Scenery 210; Lowndes III, p. 858.
