With half-titles. 37 engraved plates, one of these double-page and one folding, numerous engraved illustrations, many on india paper (light spotting in the plates and occasional offsetting, plates of vol. 3 with dampstain in the bottom margin). Contemporary russia, sides framed in gilt and blind, edges marbled (spines lightly faded, light scuffing, spotting in the blanks).
FIRST EDITION IN A FINE BINDING. 'It is perhaps the most lavish of all Dibdin's works... its publication was a financial success and doubtless marks the high-water mark of the Dibdinian bibliomania' (Jackson).
