Fourth vol. of text lacking pp.65-284 and bound in at end of vol. 3. 454 hand-coloured lithographic plates (only, of 470) on 451 sheets, of which 54 double-page, and 4 plain lithographic plates bound in at the end of vol. 1. (Occasional light spotting to text, some light browning and offsetting to plates mainly affecting tissue guards.) Text vols bound in 20th-century leather-backed paper-covered boards, original printed wrappers used as endpapers, plates unbound in 20th-century leather-backed cloth portfolios with slipcases.
Lenormant had intended to enter the legal profession, but a trip to Italy in 1825 fired his enthusiasm for the ancient world. He travelled with Champollion to Egypt in 1828, before becoming curator at the Bibliothèque royale. He later lectured on ancient history and archaeology at the Sorbonne.
