Lot Essay

Rural England was the inspiration for much of Birket Foster's work. In 1863 he moved to Witley in Surrey. Here he executed many watercolours depicting rustic pastimes. In the present watercolour an idyllic harvest scene is depicted. The straw has been cut and bound into stooks which are now being loaded onto a cart. The warm haze of summer dominates the scene.
