Lot Essay

Maitland was born in Chelsea and exhibited with the 'London Impressionists' at the Goupil Gallery in 1889, in an attempt to show what Sickert described as 'the magic and poetry' of city life. His paintings betray the influence of Whistler, in both composition and handling.
