Lot Essay

The present sketch is a preliminary study for Etty's Phaedria and Cymochles on the Idle Lake, which he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1835, no. 310 (The Forbes Collection of Victorian Pictures and Works of Art; Christie's, London, 20 February, 2003, lot 174). An earlier version of the same subject, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1832, no. 360, is now in Princeton University Art Museum: studies for this picture exist in the Victorian & Albert Museum, London.
