Having resigned his military commands in 1650, Fairfax devoted himself to literary and religious pursuits at his house at Nun Appleton, Yorkshire. The presence of Andrew Marvell, who was tutor to Fairfax's daughter at Nun Appleton, lends a particular interest to Fairfax's verse compositions. (3)
