Paul de Kock was the chronicler par excellence of the popular life of mid-century Paris, of the guinguettes and cabarets -- and indeed bouquetières (flower girls): 'Il peint admirablement les moeurs populaires, la malice parisienne, la bonhomie campagnarde, la sottise bourgeoise' (Nouvelle biographie générale).
