RUSKIN, John (1819-1900). Five autograph letters signed to Benjamin Vincent, Mrs Barnard, Olwen Edwards, Alexander Edmonston and an unknown recipient, Denmark Hill, Corpus Christi, Brantwood and Park Street, 23 October [?1870] - 4 June 1886, and n.d., and an autograph manuscript draft, together approximately 7 pages, 8vo and 4to; one envelope (partly laid down).

Correspondence relating to literature, Ruskin's publications on art and natural history, including a one-page draft of 'a bit of my new Venetian guide', a letter to Mrs Bernard mentioning his future work Proserpina [Ruskin's study of wayside flowers published in 1886], an appreciative letter to Olwen Edwards, 'your letter makes me extremely happy and as proud as a peacock ... in your choice of my books -- the Ethics being one I hoped everybody would like ... The Sesame is popular' (presumably 'Sesame and Lilies', his lectures on the reading of books). Two letters offer an insight into Ruskin's reading and research, as he tries to obtain copies of a wide range of publications ('I want to see Sir Uvedale Price on the Picturesque and I want the last edition of Forbes on the glaciers').
