'I am arrived at such a pitch of sentimentality (for a plain girl without a penny in the world) that my whole seyn, être, or being, is bouleversé or capsized ... God knows how it will end': Thackeray's account of meeting his future wife, Isabella Shawe [whom he was to marry on 20 August the following year, in spite of her lack of fortune and her parents' opposition]. The letter continues with advice on his cousin's approaching university career ('keep yourself out of DEBT') and the continuation of his European tour to Italy. (3)
