8° (162 x 102mm). Wood-engraved frontispiece and 2 plates after Hablot K. Browne. Three "heads" on title, reprised on front wrapper. (Light creasemark to early leaves, corner of end leaves slightly soiled.) Original pictorial buff wrappers, trimmed edges (lightly soiled, upper cover with light creasemark, spine chipped and with small repair at foot), green cloth slipcase. Provenance: Charles Dickens (bookplate) -- Kenyon Starling (bookplate) -- William E. Self (bookplate; his sale, Christie's New York, 2 April 2008, lot 10).
AUTHOR'S COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION with second state of his bookplate and Gad's Hill Place sale label. The three heads represent Sunday "as it is", "as Sabbath bills would make it" and "as it might be". A vigorous attack on the campaign for Sunday observance, Dickens's pamphlet not only argued for the preservation of popular recreations but for the opening of places such as museums and art galleries on Sundays. It contained "Phiz's" youthful designs, one of the plates showing the "very animated game of cricket" described on pp. 42-44. Not included in any lifetime edition of Dickens's works. Eckel pp. 102-103; Kitton p. 61: "excessively scarce"; Gimbel B30.
