'I think it very unlikely that the Shakespeare Club will be disposed to receive any new members ... even if they are disposed to elect, I have determined for various cogent reasons not to propose'. Dickens explains the 'unfathomable' way the club regulates its proceedings to the writer George Henry Lewes (1817-1878), the future companion of George Eliot. Dickens had met Lewes soon after the latter's favourable reviews of Pickwick Papers and Oliver Twist in 1837 and later invited him to join his company of amateur actors.
