Small 8° (164 x 104mm). Original printed wrappers (lightly dust-soiled). In blue cloth chemise and slipcase. With a cabinet photograph of Dickens by Elliott and Fry (90 x 57mm).
FIRST EDITION, FINE COPY of this melodrama about Franklin's expedition to discover the North-West passage. Collins wrote it in 1856. Dickens made revisions, cast and stage-managed the play for its first performance at Tavistock House in January 1857. The aim was to benefit the family of his friend, Douglas Jerrold, who had just died. Part of the plot, involving a character who dies saving his rival for the heroine's sake, had a profound influence on A Tale of Two Cities where Charles Darnay, an innocent member of the hated St. Evremonde family, is only saved from the guillotine by the heroic sacrifice of Sydney Carton. In 1866, Collins made further revisions for another production which resulted in this printing. Eckel p. 166; Gimbel H104. (2)
