A RARE IN-LAID VELLUM BINDING. "Only four inlaid vellum bindings of this period are known to me" (Hobson, Bindings in Cambridge Libraries, p.120).
The New Testament. London: Bonham Norton and John Bill, 1625. [Bound with:] The whole booke of Davids psalms. London: printed for the Company of Stationers, 1625. 16° (150 x 75mm). Printed music. Contemporary embroidered binding of green silk worked in coloured threads, a figure of a woman in a garden landscape on each side, joined at the spine (worn, edges reinforced with linen, remains of one tie); modern box. Provenance: Thore Virgin, 1926 (inscription, bookplate; Bib. Quarnforsiana, 1947, 1625). - And another in the lot: Bible, 1698, 17th-century "sombre" binding, 18° (light wear at hinges, tailcap torn). Sold as bindings, not subject to return. (3)
