FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY OF THOMAS MANN'S LAST GREAT WORK, inscribed by Thomas Mann in German to Marianne Schmidt on front blank, stating that this copy of Dr Faustus contains some smaller corrections. Mann is giving her this copy as a thank you for her sympathy. He concludes that he hopes that the corrections will give her a certain advantage over other readers. The inscription is signed and dated Pacific Palisades, California, 19 September 1948. The book contains several little amendements by Thomas Mann.

Marianne Schmidt was the personal assistant of Lennart Bernadotte, Count of Wisborg (1909-2005). According to the vendor, Marianne Schmidt's nephew, Marianne Schmidt provided Thomas Mann with some assistance for his return to Europe from his exile in the USA. In 1933, after Hitler assumed power, Mann emigrated first to Küsnacht near Zürich, and in 1939 to the United States. In 1942 the Mann family moved to Pacific Palisades, California. He returned to Europe in 1952. PMM 298.
