Each with shell-and-husk carved top rail on a pounced ground, above a solid vase-form splat with foliate ears, the drop-in seat covered in green velvet, on acanthus-carved cabriole legs and claw-and-ball feet, one numbered 'III' and the other 'VIIII'

Conceived with marbled 'vase' splats framed by serpentined 'truss' pilasters in early Georgian 'India' fashion, the chairs relate to a pair of hall chairs on hairy paw feet which were supplied to Heydon Hall, Norfolk, probably around 1740 and sold Christie's, London, 7 June 2007, lot 70 (hammer price £75,000).
Chairs with related shaped splats also centred by bas relief shells were in the collection of Percival D. Griffiths, F.S.A., Sandridgebury and illustrated in R.W. Symonds, English Furniture from Charles II to George II, London, 1929, p.45, fig, 23.
