Lot Essay

An almost identical pair was sold by the late 2nd Viscount Camrose, Christie's house sale, Hackwood Park, 20-22 April 1998, lot 129.
The early provenance of the Hackwood Park urns is unknown. The crossed palm-fronds however, relate to the palm and bullrush ornament that John Vardy (d.1765), the architect responsible for the remodelling of Hackwood Park for the fifth duke of Bolton (c.1761-3), used repeatedly on mirrors for the house.
