Lot Essay

Howarth was one of the many Sheffield edge-tool makers of the late 19th/early 20th century and his tools are conventional woodturning chisels and gouges. The Holtzapffel examples, however, include special tools for turning ivory and dense hardwoods (see lot 6).
Holtzapffel & Co were in business from 1828 to the 1920s, having previously worked as Holtzapffel & Deyerlein (tools from the period 1804-27 some of which are included in this set are simply marked H&D). The firm was started in 1794 in London by John Holtzapffel and specialised in ornamental turning lathes and equipment for gentleman amateurs.
