EARLY 19TH CENTURY
The rounded rectangular original red leather-lined top above a frieze with three short drawers on one side and one long on the other, the long drawer interior with 'III 270CT 1966' (crossed out) and '16 MACRH [sic] 1967/152' inscribed in chalk, on reeded ring-turned tapering legs with brass caps and castors, the underside inscribed in pencil 'Thrope (?)/borne(?), the drawers mahogany-lined and with convex quarter-fillets

Lot Essay

This robust writing-table, with reeded and antique-fluted pillar, is embellished in the Louis Quatorze manner. Golden 'ormolu' laurels wreath its cornice above a triumphal palm-flower frieze whose 'buhl-inlaid' tablets evoke Apollo as poetry deity. Such inlay was a speciality of craftsmen such as Thomas Parker (d. 1830), who served from 1805 as 'Cabinet and Buhl Manufacturer to the Court'.
