With short boxed tubular cuffs flared at the base, each with two boxed metacarpal plates decorated with file nicks over the subsidiary edges, matching knuckle-plates, four finger plates fluted between the fingers, and scaled thumb defences issuant from the canted lower edges of the cuff

Provenance: The armoury of the Earls of Pembroke at Wilton House, Wiltshire. Sotheby & Co, 23 June 1921 and 14 June 1923. Originally belonging to a series of black medium cavalry armours (demilance) at Wilton; these probably acquired to equip the retinue of William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke (1501?-1570) as Captain of Calais (appointed 1556). The armours in question very likely worn by the Pembroke retinue at the Battle of St. Quentin in 1557. Forty-seven of those armours are recorded in the Wilton House Inventory taken in December 1558. Gauntlets from this series are in the Royal Armouries, Leeds.
