The Porte Saint-Denis was built in 1672 from designs by the architect François Blondel (1618-1686) and the sculptor Michel Anguier (1613-1686). Commissioned by King Louis XIV, it commemorated his victories on the Rhine and Franche-Comté. Located at the crossing of rue Saint-Denis, rue Faubourg Saint-Denis, the Boulevard de Bonne-Nouvelle and the Boulevard Saint-Denis, it served as one of the gates in the old city walls of Paris.
