FIRST EDITION. These elaborate festivities celebrated the entry of Emperor Charles VI's son PHILIP II, who governed Spain in his father's absence. Heavy rains largely spoiled the events of the day, which had required the efforts of more than 1,700 workmen. Editions in Latin, French and Flemish were all published in 1550, by the same printer and the woodcuts are idential in all three versions. Adams S-765; Berlin 2937; Landwehr Spenclid Ceremonies 23; Vinet 557.
[Bound after:] BEDE, The Venerable. Ecclesiasticae historiae gentis Anglorum libri quinque. Antwerp: Joannes Gravius, 1550. 2o. John de Grave's edition, which features a text much-improved from the editions of 1500 and earlier. This edition draws on manuscripts that include the Bedae Continuatio (known to survive in at least eight manuscripts), with Bede's epitaph and death date at end. This is the first edition of the Continuatio. Adams A-452.
