Engraved title-page and five engraved folding plates by ALFONSO PARIGI depicting the set designs of his father GIULIO PARIGI (the second plate with short tear along fold.) (A few insignificant spots.) 19th-century red quarter morocco (hinges cracked). Provenance: Gustavo Camillo Galletti (inkstamp on title); Baron Horace de Landau (1824-1903, bookplate).
This ballet was performed on 3 February 1625 at the court of the Grand Duke of Tuscany in honor of PRINCE LADISLAUS of Poland (1595-1648, King Sigismund IV from 1632). The libretto was composed for the Prince's aunt, Archduchess Maria Magdalena of Austria (widow of Cosimo II de'Medici and mother of Ferdinando II) for Ladislaus's visit to the Medici court. FERDINANDO SARACINELLI was the poet and opera librettist and confidential steward of Cosimo II and Ferdinando II, Grand Dukes of Tuscany; he was also superintendent of court music. He wrote the text of madrigals, ballettos, invenzioni and other theatrical entertainment set to music by PERI and LORENZO ALLEGRI. Of note is Parigi's final plate showing a portion of the villa that was destroyed in the 18th century. This first edition contains 45 pages; Cecconcelli published a 36-page second edition later the same year. Allacci 482; Berlin 4113 (second edition); Cicognara 1432.
