FLORENCE 1634 -- CAVALVANTI, Andrea. Esequie del Serenissimo Principe Francesco. Celebrate in Fiorenza dal Serenissimo Ferdinando II. Granduca di Toscano suo fratello. Florence: Giovanni Batista Landini, 1634.
4o (198 x 143 mm). Engraved portrait of Francesco de' Medici, folding plate of the interior and eight emblematic engravings in text by STEFANO DELLA BELLA after the design of ALFONSO PARIGI. 18th-century marbled boards (leather backstrip renewed).
The obsequies for FRANCESCO DE' MEDICI (1614-1634), fourth son of Cosimo II, who died of the plague on 25 July 1634. Alfonso Parigi assumed the responsibilities of his ailing father Giulio in 1628 and designed the catafalque, exterior and interior decorations. The theme of his decoration was the power of death and its chief feature was the sculptural decor of the walls of the nave, much larger than any previous. Stefano della Bella produced that large folding plate, his first festival print after Alfonso Parigi's designs, the portrait of the 20-year-old Francesco and the eight devices, which are said to be derived from Bernini funeral monuments. Berlin 3204; de Vesme, Della Bella 36, 74, 971-78; Vinet 610.
