4o (268 x 190 mm). Half-title. 9 engraved plates (one folding) by MICHEL LEBOUTEUX after BENTO MORGANTI, engraved head-pieces by G.F.L. DEBRIE, engraved portrait of John V, and engraved initials in text. Contemporary speckled calf gilt, spine gilt (some scuffing and light wear).
Upon the death of JOHN V (1689-1750), King of Portugal, after almost 50 years of rule, obsequies were held at the basilica of Saint Mary at Lisbon. Descriptions of the funerary decorations were written by Morganti, who also created most of the drawings used for the plates, and included the ornate castrum doloris over the catafalque, drapery, and numerous inscriptions recording the deceased King's virtues and deeds. The second part of the work provides the text of the funeral oration delivered by Father TIMOTHEO DE OLIVEIRA.
