Contemporary vellum (front cover slightly bowed). The description of the elaborate funeral for GEORGE MONCK (1608-1670), First Earl of Albemarle, on 30 April 1670. The lengthy and solemn march began at Somerset House in the Strand and from there proceeded to Westminster Abbey for the services. Nineteen of the double-page plates illustrate the continuous procession and also identify those mourners involved in the ceremony, including Gervase Price, Thomas Player, the earls of Bath, Sandwich, Suffolk, and Bridgewater, numerous drummers, baronets, knights, servants, mourning horses, pall bearers, and even Sandford himself among others. The other plates depict the earl laying in state and his catafalque at Westminster Abbey, which was designed by Francis Barlow. The three leaves of text bound at the end of this copy provide details about the Earl's laying in state of Somerset House and the order of the procession, as well as a physical description of the tomb.
