Allegorical engraved title to part 1, engraved vignette of the play's final scene on title to part 2, printer's woodcut device above colophon, 3 full-sheet engraved plates of Rhetoricians' processions, 3 one-page engravings and 15 large engraved emblematic illustrations. (Sheet P3.4 apparently supplied from another copy, occasional browning.) Original Mechelen PUBLISHER'S BINDING of gold-tooled and paneled vellum over pasteboard, St. John the Evangelist's eagle device of the Mechelen guild and Chamber of Rhetoric, De Peoene, and their motto, the incipit of the Last Gospel, blocked in the center of both covers, red edges, (ties missing). Provenance: perhaps the Mechelen Rhetoricians (binding); A.L. van Gendt (sold to Gourary 1953).
The famous blazoenfeest, performances of verse and songs by Rhetorician Chambers, which took place at Mechelen in the Southern Netherlands on the eve of the close of the 12-year truce that interrupted the Dutch rebellion against the Spanish Crown, was to a large extent organized by Jan Thieullier, who was also the author of the tragedy that constitutes an integral second part of this finely illustrated book with which he immortalized the event.
