2o (323 x 210 mm). Engraved title, large engraved folding plate of a catafalque and 34 engraved half-page emblematic plates by FRANZ XAVER JOSEPH SPäTH after N.G. STUBER. (Some light marginal worming to O2-Y2.) Contemporary vellum, spine ink lettered. Provenance: Munich, Jesuit College, 1737 ("Collegii S[ocietatis J[esu] Monac[hi] 1737" inscription on title).

Published at the occasion of the death of Elector MAXIMILIAN II (1662- 1726), also known as Max Emanuel or Maximilian Emanuel, the Wittelsbach ruler of Bavaria and an elector of the Holy Roman Empire. He was also the last Governor of the Spanish Netherlands and Duke of Luxembourg. The beautifully illustrated work contains a description of the sumptous funeral as well as euelogies in prose and verse, in Latin followed by German translation. The folding plate of the catafalque and the fine emblematic illustrations by NIKOLAUS GOTTFRIED STUBER (1688-1749), represent the height of Bavarian baroque illustration. Landwehr, German Emblem Books 379; Praz p.88.
