NUREMBERG 1449-1539 -- SCHEMBART BOOK, in German, ILLUSTRATED MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [Nuremberg, c.1540]
4o, 205 x 150mm (8 1/8 x 6 inches), 72 leaves in gatherings of four, COMPLETE, SIXTY-FOUR FULL-PAGE ILLUSTRATIONS OF MASKED AND COSTUMED FIGURES on versos facing rectos with text written in black ink in a cursive German hand and with TWENTY ILLUSTRATIONS OF CARNIVAL FLOATS, all drawings fully coloured (staining and spotting, especially affecting the first four leaves, some gutters torn and ff.17-18 and ff.64-69 repaired or reinforced). Contemporary reused vellum from a 15th-century Gradual or noted Missal (rubbed and spotted, hinges split, lacking fore-edge ties), blue cloth box with leather lettering-piece. Provenance: Princely House of Liechtenstein, bookplate and shelfmark inside upper cover; purchased from H.P. Kraus 1955.
