PARIS 1730 -- Description de la feste et du feu d'artifice Qui doit étre tiré à Paris, sur la Riviere au sujet de la naissance de Monseigneur le Dauphin. Paris: Pierre Gandouin, 1730.
4o (296 x 230 mm). 3 engraved folding plates by JACQUES DUMONT and MICHEL DEMARNE after JEAN NICOLAS SERVANDONI, JEAN BAUSSINE, and JEAN-BAPTISTE PITOINT (a few short tears). Contemporary marbled paper wrappers, uncut (some minor wear along spine); cloth folding case. Provenance: Doctor Maurice Vimont (bookplate).
In honor of the birth of LOUIS (1729-1765), Dauphin of France, son of Louis XV and Marie Leczinksa, on 4 September 1729, King Philip V of Spain ordered his ambassadors to spare no expense in planning a fête, held on 31 January 1730, to celebrate the event. The two ambassadors organized an elaborate fireworks display in the middle of the Seine, as well as a banquet held in the garden of the Hotel de Bouillon and a pastoral, complete with music and dancing, in the gallery of the hotel. The plate illustrating the fireworks is after Jean-Nicolas Servandoni (1695-1766), an Italian painter, architect, and organizer of spectacles, who worked at court under both Louis XIV and Louis XV. Although Louis died before becoming king, his birth secured the French succession to the throne and three of this sons went on to become kings of France. Berlin 3010; Ruggieri 558; Vinet 518.
