PISA 1639 -- [CASCINA, Pietro]. Alfea reverente Rappresentata nella seconda venuta della Serenissima Vittoria della Rovere Gran Duchessa di Toscana in essa Città l'Anno 1639. Pisa: Francesco delle Dote, 1639.
4o (221 x 166 mm). Large folding plate by ERHOLE BAZICALUVA (3-in. repaired tear to blank upper margin above subject, some soiling and a few stains). Contemporary Italian vellum gilt (small portion of gilt peeled on rear cover).
Cascina describes the triumphal entry of VITTORIA DELLA ROVERE (1622-1694), the wife of Ferdinando II de' Medici and Duchess of Florence, into Pisa. Bazicaluva's plate shows her chariots entering the square. In the background to the right is the Cathedral of Pisa with the leaning tower, and on the left, the Arno. The float drawn by six white horses carries the orchestra. At the bottom are miniscule renditions of the floats, set in a frame which recalls della Bella's 1637 "Horse Festival." The print is one of the best festival prints in the Callot manner, capturing the joy of the crowd and festive atmosphere of the occasion. Meaume 1371; Moreni I:223; Thieme-Becker III:105.
