REIMS 1547 -- Le sacre et couronement du Roy Henry deuxieme de ce nom. Paris: Robert Estienne, [1547].
8o (160 x 102 mm). Estienne's woodcut device (no. 11) on title and full-page woodcut of the coronation ceremony in the Cathedral of Reims (shaved at fore-margin). Modern red half morocco.
The official account of the coronation of HENRI II as King of France on 26 July 1547. It lists all the persons attending and describes in detail the long ceremonies and processions. The detailed descriptions of the clothes worn by the participants is most interesting, and include comments on the jewels, ceremonial plate, etc. (the crown was that of Charlemagne). After the ceremony, the King appeared at the doorway of the Cathedral and distributed a thousand gold coins and ten thousand silver coins, each with his figurehead and the date of the coronation. Although Estienne issued three undated editions of the work, only this issue is illustrated. It is one of only five books published by Estienne with illustrations. Brun, pp.296-97; Renouard 68.25; Harvard/Mortimer French 472 (another issue); Lipperheide Sg 5; Rothschild 2142; Shreiber 94.
