ROME 1666 -- APPARATO DELL'ESEQUIE CELEBRATE ALLA CHRISTIANISSIMA REGINA DI FRANCIA ANNA MARIA D'AUSTRIA. ROME: GIACOMO DRAGONDELLI, 1667.
4O (295 X 216 MM). ENGRAVED FRONTISPIECE AND LARGE FOLDING PLATE BY PIETRO SANTE BARTOLI after the designs of GIOVANNI FRANCESCO GRIMALDI (some old reinforcements along folds on verso). Contemporary Italian red paper boards (light wear to spine); cloth folding case. Provenance: purchased from H.P. Kraus, 1957.
The chapter and canons of St. John Lateran conducted these commemorative ceremonies for ANNA of Austria, Queen Dowager of France, in their basilica on 1 October 1666, ten months after her death. Bartoli's engravings preserve views of two ephemeral decorations put up for the occasion after the remarkable work of the Bolognese architect Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi. The frontispiece allegorically depicts the triumph over Death of a beautiful young woman (the idealized Queen Anne) rising from the tomb. The large folding plate reproduces a funeral monument designed for the queen which filled the entire main apse of the church. VERY RARE.
