STUTTGART 1617 -- WECKHERLIN, Georg-Rodolf. Kurtze Beschreibung Dess zu Stutgarten bey den Fürstlichen Kindtauf und Hochzeit Jüngst-gehaltenen Frewden-Fests... Tübingen: Dieterich Werlin, 1618.

2 works bound in one volume, oblong 2o (278 x 350 mm). First work: Engraved title and 92 engraved plates (including the 13 section titles, plates 5-10 with overslips) after ESAIAS VAN HULSEN some by MATTHIAS MERIAN and FRIEDRICH BRENTEL; second work: woodcut coat-of-arms on title. Some minor staining, mostly marginal). 19th century half sheep, spine in six compartments gilt lettered green and red morocco spine labels in two (some rubbing to edges).

This volume contains two related works both celebrating the baptism of ULRICH the son of Duke JOHANN FRIEDRICH of Württemberg (1582-1628) son Ulrich and the marriage of his brother LUDWIG FRIEDRICH to MAGDALENA ELISABETH countess of Hessen. The festivities were celebrated from 13-17 July 1617 in Stuttgart. The drawings for the plates for the 14 different "Aufzüge" (Processions) are attributed to Esaias van Hulsen (1570-ca 1640) a Dutch artist and engraver residing in Stuttgart. Several of the engravings are signed by Friedrich Brentel of Strassburg and Matthias Merian. Hulsen probably also participated in the engraving. The accompanying text is by the poet GEORG RUDOLF WECKHERLIN (1584-1653). The baptism and the wedding were - like 7 years earlier (see lot 476) - a union of two protestant families. Guests of honor were Princess Elizabeth of England and her husband Elector Friedrich of the Palatine. This was the last festival of the Würtemberg court before the outbreak of the Thirty Year War. First work: Graesse III:388; Lipperheide Sbd 6; Ruggieri 957; Vinet 740; Second work: Graesse VI:427; Lipperheide Sbd 6 and 7.
