The celebration in Valencia of the canonization of ST. THOMAS of Villanova (1488-1555, canonized 1658) best known for his works in charity ("Charity is not just giving, rather removing the need of those who receive charity and liberating them from it when possible") and for sending the first Augustinian friars to Mexico. He was nominated as archbishop of Valencia in 1544 but refused the position until ordered to assume it. Aided by his assistant bishop, Juan Segrià, he put in order a diocese that for a century had not had direct pastoral government. He organized a special college for Moorish converts, and in particular an effective plan for social assistance, welfare, and charity. His sermons, found in the second part of this volume are highly praised. His "Sermon on the Love of God" is considered one of the greatest of the 16th century. The plates depict the many decorations and floats constructed for Valencia's festivities. Palau 205381.
