VENICE 1688 -- SARTORIO, Bernardo. I numi a diporto su l'Adriatico. Venice: Andrea Poletti, [1688].
2o (398 x 281mm). Engraved frontispiece and 14 plates by ALLESANDRO DELLA VIA after LODOVICO LAMBERTI and GIO. CARBONARI (2 plates folding and 12 double-page). 18th-century Italian half vellum, marbled boards. Provenance: purchased from Lucien Goldschmidt, 1955.
The theme of the "regatta" held for FERDINAND III DE' MEDICI (1663-1713) was a parade of classical gods at the symbolic confluence of the Arno and the Adriatic. The first of della Via's plates depicts "una gran Macchina la Reggia ornatissima di Netuno," a floating palace of Neptune. This is followed by 12 double-page plates, each portraying a baroque galley with a deity at the prow or stern, while the magnificent final plate unfolds to reveal a bird's-eye view of the whole regatta as it approaches St. Mark's. Berlin 3052; Cicognara 1478; Lipperheide Si32; Ruggieri 830; Vinet 616.
