VIENNA 1667 -- SBARRA, Francesco. Il pomo d'oro, Festa Teatrale Rappresentata in Vienna per l'augustissime nozze delle sacre cesaree reali Maestà di Leopoldo, e Margherita. Vienna: Matteo Cosmerovio, 1668.
2o (295 x 180 mm). 25 large folding engraved and etched plates after LUDOVICO BURNACINI: the theatrical dedication by MELCHIOR KÜSEL (1626-83), 23 theatrical sets by MATTHäUS KüSEL and the crowded Baroque interior of the vast Cortina Theater by FRANS GEFFELS (1625-94). (Two plates slightly frayed at outer edge, small marginal tears in two others, the Geffels plate washed, pressed and supplied from another copy.) Contemporary or early-18th-century Austrian mottled calf, gilt-blocked coat-of-arms on sides, spine tooled in compartments, (binding rubbed, gold faded). Provenance: Johann Georg, Freiherr von Pichelstorff und Altenburg (armorial binding); Lucien Goldschmidt (sold to Gourary 1963).
THE FOLIO DE LUXE EDITION (for the octavo and quarto editions by the same court printer, see the two previous lots). The iconography of the large dramatic copperplates is the same as that of the small-format series, except for the important etching of the interior of Burnacini's theatre, which is unique to this large-format edition. As the theatre was destroyed during the Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683, Geffels's plate has considerable documentary value (reproduced in Biach-Schiffmann, Burnacini ill. 18). In 1726 Pichelstorff built a fine castle, which is still standing, on his baronial domain of Dross in the vast forest expanse called Waldviertel, Lower Austria. There he kept a considerable library of 17th- and early-18th-century illustrated books relating to festivals, architecture and history. Berlin 4127; Vinet 669; Watanabe 75.
